Dean M. arrived in Portland in early 2001 after growing up in a blue-collar family in Michigan. Although he received an associates degree in electronics, it wasn’t sufficient to earn a living wage. Dean came to Dignity Village in late 2003 after living on the streets and under bridges in Portland for two-and-a-half years. He had a number of unsatisfactory experiences with the shelter system, but found the Village to be a supportive community in helping him control his panic disorder. He has served as our Secretary for eight months, as well as serving on our Intake Committee and on Security. Dean has been a key participant in the writing of the narration and content of the Toolkit as well as a participant in feedback sessions on working drafts of the tool.
